چکیده

In this study, static load bearing strength of pin-connected carbon fiber-reinforced polyphenylenesulphide (PPS) composites that have [(08/908)]3s stacking sequence was investigated. Firstly, the samples were loaded dynamically, and then the same samples were loaded statically. The results obtained from this sequential experiment were compared with the results obtained from samples that were loaded only statically. In addition, the fatigue life and failure mechanisms were investigated with respect to the selection of the geometrical parameters. Dynamic and static loading experiments were performed according to the ASTM STP 749 and ASTM D953 standards, respectively. To obtain optimum load bearing values, the ratio of distance between the edge and hole center to hole diameter (E/D) and ratio of sample width to hole diameter (W/D) has been systematically changed. According to the experimental results, maximum load bearing values have been obtained when E/D ratio was equal to 2. POLYM. COMPOS., 31:25–31, 2010. a 2009 Society of Plastics Engineers

MULTI FRACTURE/DELAMINATION ANALYSIS OF COMPOSITES SUBJECTED TO IMPACT LOADINGS

A combined finite/ discrete element method is presented for modelling of composite specimens subjected to dynamic/impact loadings. The main task is set on developing an algorithm for simulation of potential bonding and debonding/delamination phenomena during impact or general dynamic loading conditions. In addition, full fracture analysis can also be performed. The proposed approach adopts a ge...

Fatigue and ultrasonic testing of epoxy-glass composites

Purpose: The purpose of this paper was to find relationship between the degree of strength degradation caused by fatigue and the changes of ultrasonic wave characteristics such as wave velocity and damping coefficient. Design/methodology/approach: Epoxy-glass composites were subjected to oscillatory bending loadings with constant deflection. During fatigue procedure the force needed to achieve ...

Buckling Behavior of Semi-scale Steel Tank with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Ring Subjected to Lateral Uniform Pressure Loading

Research on increasing the buckling strength of tanks carrying fluid and also cylindrical shells of thin-walled steel in civil engineering and mechanics is important. This is due to the widespread use of these structures in the industry. Due to the low thickness of the body and also due to the pressure forces entering these tanks, these structures are exposed to lateral buckling. In this resear...

Optimal overlap length in staggered architecture composites under dynamic loading conditions

Hybrid staggered architecture composites, like nacre and bone, are known for two discernible aspects: superior strength and synergistic toughness. What is lacking is the scientific rationale proving suitability of these materials under impact/time dependent loading. The current investigation aims to address the structure-property correlationship of these materials by development of an analytica...

Compressive strength after blast of sandwich composite materials

Composite sandwich materials have yet to be widely adopted in the construction of naval vessels despite their excellent strength-to-weight ratio and low radar return. One barrier to their wider use is our limited understanding of their performance when subjected to air blast. This paper focuses on this problem and specifically the strength remaining after damage caused during an explosion. Carb...
